me to leave Shorty there by himself\r\nD                       G\r\nCome down and wait on a man\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n    C                      Am\r\nThe eyes of the little man narrowed\r\n    C                          Am\r\nThe smile disappeared from his face\r\nC                         Am\r\nGone was the friendliness that I had seen\r\n      Dm                         E\r\nAnd a wild look of hate took its place\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\n        Am                   Dm\r\nBut the big one continued to mock him\r\n       G                       C\r\nAnd he told me that I'd better go\r\nE                   Am\r\nFind him a couple of glasses of milk\r\n    D                       G\r\nAnd then maybe Shorty would grow\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n         C                           Am\r\nWhen the little man spoke, there was stillness\r\n   C                       Am\r\nHe made sure that everyone heard\r\nC                  Am\r\nSlowly he stepped away from the bar\r\n      Dm                   E\r\nAnd I still remember these words\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\n          Am                            Dm\r\n\"Oh, it's plain that you're lookin' for trouble\r\nG                       C\r\nTrouble's what I try to shun\r\n   E                         Am\r\nIf that's what you want, then that's what you'll get\r\n      D                          G\r\nCause cowboy, we're both packin' guns\"\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n    C                  Am\r\nHis hand was already positioned\r\n    C                      Am\r\nHis feet wide apart on the floor\r\nC                    Am\r\nI hadn't noticed but there on his hip\r\n      Dm                   E\r\nWas a short-barreled bat .44\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\n       Am                     Dm\r\nIt was plain he was ready and waitin'\r\n   G                        C\r\nHe leaned a bit forward and said\r\n      E                      Am\r\n\"When you call me Shorty, say Mister, my friend\r\nD                     G\r\nMaybe you'd rather be dead\"\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n       C                   Am\r\nIn the room was a terrible silence\r\n       C                          Am\r\nAs the big one stepped out on the floor\r\nC                            Am\r\nAll drinkin' stopped and the tick of the clock\r\n     Dm                           E\r\nSaid death would wait ten seconds more\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\n   Am                        Dm\r\nHe cursed once or twice in a whisper\r\n       G                        C\r\nAnd he said with a snarl on his lips\r\n E                 Am\r\n\"Nobody's Mister to me, little man!\"\r\n       D                          G\r\nAnd he grabbed for the gun on his hip\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n        C                          Am\r\nBut the little man's hand was like lightning\r\n    C               Am\r\nThe bat .44 was the same\r\n     C               Am\r\nThe .44 spoke and it sent lead and smoke\r\n    Dm                  E\r\nAnd seventeen inches of flame\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\n        Am                        Dm\r\nFor the big one had never cleared leather\r\nG                      C\r\nBeaten before he could start\r\n  E                      Am\r\nA little round hole had appeared on his shirt\r\n    D                             G\r\nThe bullet went clear through his heart\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part A]\r\n    C                        Am\r\nThe little man stood there a moment\r\n     C                   Am\r\nThen holstered the bat .44\r\n      C                  Am\r\n\"It's always this way so I never stay\"\r\nDm                       E\r\nSlowly he walked out the door\r\n \r\n \r\n[Part B]\r\nAm                   Dm\r\nNobody knew where he came from\r\nG                         C\r\nThey won't forget he came by\r\nE                       Am\r\nThey won't forget how a .44 gun\r\n    D                            G\r\nOne night made the difference in size\r\n \r\n \r\n[Outro]\r\n       C                     Am\r\nAs for me, I'll remember the sadness\r\nC
