It was [D] early last December, as [G] near as I remember
While I [A7] staggered down the street in tipsy [D] pride [A7]
Soon I [D] lay down in the gutter, thinking [G] thoughts I cannot utter.
When a [A7] pig came up and lay down by my [D] side.
Two old [D] ladies passing by gave [G] me the choiceness eye
And [A7] laying there I over heard one [D] say [A7]
You can [D] tell a man who boozes, by the [G] company he chooses.
Thenβ¦..the [A7] pig got up and slowly walked [D] away.
Then I [D] started in to mutter, as I [G] rose up from the gutter
And I [A7] sadly went a-bout my lonely [D] way. [A7]
I was [D] weary, sick and busted – I was [G] really quite disgusted
And I [A7] vowed to sign the pledge that very [D] day
For each [D] humble, lowly creature, a great [G] lesson he can teach ya
Like the [A7] one I learned while in- the – gutter – I [D] lay [A7]
In the [D] tavern, do not tarry . . . when you’ve [G] had all you can carry
Just take [A7] up your load and slowly walk [D] a-way.
