Robert B. Andrews - Arizona - Owner of this web site - Robert@RobertAndrews.net

Bob M. Andrews - Okemos, Michigan (prev Adrian, Michigan) - 517-349-5444 - ba1234@copper.net - Note (1)

My family tree goes back to Richard Andrews in MD in the 18th Century. He and his wife Eve left MD and migrated to Stark County Ohio. I have been working with Jean Andrews who has done a great deal of research on the family history.

I live in Okemos, MI but grew-up in Adrian. Adrian is in Lenawee County which is adjacent to Fulton County Ohio where most of the Andrews' family migrated after leaving Stark County around 1850.

I've attached a will that lists the children of a Charles who died in 1780. Perhaps that will have some meaning if the children listed are siblings of the Richard who was our Charles' father.

Regarding you question about the late probating of Charles' estate, I think the probating of Edward's estate (the next one on the page) could explain this time span concern. In the days when I worked for a living, I ran across many situations where grandmother died and the family just took over her estate without going through probate. Invariable, somewhere down the road the property was up for sale or new financing was sought, and at that point it became clear that the estate needed to be probated. It's just a guess, but it's based on my experiences.

Now when it comes to Charles (1779), I feel that the family had to have money. They turned down $550 (?) for Black Jack. Even though their plans for him did not materialize, they still did not need that extra $550 in order to make their way to Stark County and buy land there. If Charles was the son of Charles listed in the will I sent you a copy of, that would provide an explanation of where the money came from. Perhaps we could find a link to the elder Charles' other sons.

There were Andrews' with adjoining property in Fulton County. Some of the names from the county abstract office are: Elijah (Lucy), Leonard, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Samuel, James(Nancy), Mathew son of James, Henry, and Andrew (Elizabeth). The first real estate transfer that I was able to find was from Campbell to Elijah and Lucy dated 6/19/1854. From Campbell to James dated 9/14/1854. And James and Nancy to Henry dated 9/23/1854. The properties were located in SW 1/4 Section 7, Town 6 N, Range 7, East, York Twp. The next transactions are for xxx 3/4 Section Town 6 N, Range 7 East, York Twp. They are: Rawson to Elizabeth dated 8/30/1856; Elizabeth and Andrew to James W. dated 12/16/1873. James W. to Robinson dated 12/26/1874. Robinson to Charlotte dated 7/4/1876. Leonard and Charlotte to Elizabeth dated 7/23/1877. Elizabeth and Andrew to Samuel E. 8/23/1879.

What is this all worth ??????? I don't know. I guess I'm too tired to think about it tonight. Today we woke-up to 10" of snow. You have probably had your share of snow, but if not, I'll gladly send you some!

Bob Andrews - 517-349-5444 - bob@msualum.com

Black Jack, the name of the slave, rings a bell and may be tied (not literally I hope) to Andrews Folly. Again, this is only what I remember (or think I remember) from the photocopies I have at home.

I have the names of the children of Charles and Sarah. One of whom was Leonard. One of Leonard's children was Albert Leonard. By his first wife he had my grandfather Clyde Delbert. He had two children by his second wife. One was the great-grandfather of another Robert Andrews whom I recently came in contact with. He lives in Phoenix and believes the family migrated from Scotland. This is based on a note from an aunt (see below).

While I knew that Charles, et. al., migrated to Stark County, I didn't know his father's name. THIS IS REMARKABLE! I am very interested in your source. I also have land records from Fulton County. After moving to Wayne County, they eventually (1851) moved to Fulton County and bought at least two parcels.

I had a hard-drive crash two years ago and most of my formatted records were scrambled. I do have a complete text file of the family. Over the next couple of weeks (months more likely), I'll try to recover the files which were originally formatted for Generations (I think that's what it's called). Also I have had my DNA checked and will be doing so again in two weeks. The first test found relatives in the British Isles beginning 18 generations ago. Most were in England, a few in Wales and only one in Scotland.

Daniel C. Andrews - danandrews@cox.net - Note (1)
My family also started in Maryland as I said, 1654. We then moved to Penn. and from there ended up here in Kansas at least 5 generations ago. Most of our side of the family were farmers, printers or soldiers. I have two sons and they are going to be very interested in this when I tell them.

Dan's family history indicates that Patrick Andrews came to America (Maryland) in 1674.

Jean Atkinson Andrews - Aiken, South Carolina (previously Brighton, Michigan) - Born 1955 - 803-514-2188 - eMail

My husband Ronald (Ron) (Charles Andrews is his gggggrandfather) is part of five generations of the Ohio branch that went to Stark County, Ohio in 1811. I strongly suspected ties to Maryland and that the family might have come through Pennsylvania on their way to Ohio, but had not been able to confirm this until making contact with Bob.

Interestingly, Richard Andrews had a son named Daniel, and at least two of Richard's other sons named their sons Daniel. So I have three Daniel's at least in my database, and there are probably more to be found.

The Ohio Andrews were mainly farmers - I have found relatively little military service (so far) in my research - there were possibly three sons of Charles Andrews who served in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (National Guard) during the Civil War - I have the pension file for one of them and am currently writing a genealogical report from his service, which I would be pleased to share with all of you once I complete it.

I have spoken with my husband and he is interested in having his DNA tested also - I have contacted Family Tree DNA and requested he be allowed to join the Andrews surname project. This is the project that you are in, correct? I will keep you posted on this activity

Also, I will be in Salt Lake City for a week in late April for the NGS Conference and to do some additional research. If there are any records there that we need to explore, I would be happy to look at them while I am out there. I am working towards certification as a professional genealogist (my post-retirement career).

It was nice to hear from you. It sounds as though you are really into this. I think it is great. I am to lazy to go too far with this. I am attaching a document to you. The format is not great, it was just for my use, but I hope you enjoy it. I was wrong in that it appears we came to this country in 1674 not 54.

My side of the Andrews family does not stay in touch with one another very well. Nothing bad going on we just contact each other every few years or so. Because of that I do not have a lot of dates etc but if you need any please let me know as I am sure I can come up with any information you might need. Let me know if this information leads to anything.

I have been able to add other information to this lineage, including further information about Charles Andrews father, Richard Andrews. I am currently working on tracing this line out of Ohio and back into probably Maryland, but have not yet obtained proof which is satisfactory to me.

Interested in information: Charles believed born in Maryland around 1779, his wife Sarah Ann (Drew) born in Virginia 12 Aug 1790, died 12 Oct. 1871 in Fulton County, Ohio. Both are buried in West Barre Cemetary - York Township, Fulton, Ohio. Marriage date unknown but in addition to daughter Elizabeth b. 1809 there are at least two and possibly three sons born later.

Interested in any sources for marriage and birth information and the name of the son born between 1809 and 1823 along with any other children. Also seeking location of the family prior to 1840.

Here is a newspaper article from Ancestry to the Canton Repository document which shows the probate lawsuit filed by Charles and David Andrews. It names the other living heirs of their father Richard, who died in 1824. As you can see, the widow Eve has already remarried.
I have a number of sources naming Richard Andrews as the father of Charles:

  1. Richard Andrews will obtained from Probate Court in Stark County (he died 1824) names five of his sons, among them Charles.
  2. A probate lawsuit filed September 1828 by Charles and David Andrews which names all the living children/heirs of Richard Andrews and their spouses. The lawsuit was published in the Canton (Ohio) Repository, which is filmed and online through Ancestry. This was the 'breakthrough' document I used to connect Charles and Richard.
  3. An 1890's Stark County history mentions the family (in quite unflattering terms) Ð listing father Richard, mother Eve, and a number of their sons and son-in-laws including Charles. It lists the family as coming from the Hagerstown, MD area but I have not yet been able to locate them in any records there.
  4. The 1820 U.S. census for Stark County, Ohio lists Richard, Charles, and David (another son) living in close proximity to one another.

Richard Andrews was born abt. 1748 (calculated from the death notice) and died 11 Nov 1824 (calculated from the newspaper notice). The death notice in the Canton Repository appeared on 18 Nov 1824 as follows:
DIED - On Thursday last Mr. Richard Andrews, of Perry township aged 76 years.
I use TMG (The Master Genealogist) for my genealogy software. Most software programs, including yours will allow you to extract your data and create a file in a ÒGedcomÓ format which most other software programs will read and import.

You are correct, I did not include a listing of Richard Andrews siblings Ð when he moved to Stark County, Ohio in 1811 he was already in his early 60Õs. Whether he moved to Ohio with siblings and not just his children, I have not been able to determine with any level of certainty. If you have any information on possible siblings, I would like to review it and perhaps we can research this further.

Thanks for sending along a PDF of Charles Andrews will abstract. How do you think this will relates to Richard and his son Charles Andrews? Do you believe this is Richard Andrews father?

It is possible - Richard (b. 1748) could be one of the youngest sons and would have been about 22 years of age in 1780. If the children are listed in birth order, William and Charles are older than Richard and Edward and Jonathan are younger. Since sons Charles and Richard are listed as executors, they must be at least 21 years of age in 1780.

Any idea why is there a lapse of 36 years between the date of the will (14 Dec 1780) and what I assume to be the filing date (1 Oct 1816)? This is a very long time, and in fact is after the date (1811) that we know Richard Andrews purchased land and moved to Ohio. Perhaps the will was not filed until after the death of wife Elizabeth, and perhaps his property was sold then Ð we would need to check deed records in Maryland.

Richard b. 1748 DID name some of his children the same names, possibly William, Charles, Rachel, and of course Richard (after himself) Ð interestingly, these are names of only his possible siblings who are older than he is. None of his possible younger siblings names appear in his childrenÕs names (that I know of). Of course, even this is not proof of relationship as the names are so common.

RichardÕs son Charles b. 1779 also named one of his sons Elijah, but the surnames Medly/Medley, Burditt, or Hinton have not crossed my research path so far.

Jan 2010: We discussed the family tree that exists on Ancestory.com. The bottom right hand corner discusses sharing a person's family tree. Is this for free? If it is, perhaps this would be a better way for us to share information.

History: - Daniel C's family history indicates that Patrick Andrews came to America (Maryland) in 1674.
